Physiatry Articles Journal Activity With Self-Assessment Exam (MOC) - Volume 6
Course Overview Vol. 6
Read a curated group of articles related to strokes. These articles are selected by expert physiatrists across the field to provide the highest academic quality. Reading these articles and correctly answering four questions on each article will fulfill an ABPMR maintenance of certification (MOC) requirement through reading high-yield peer-reviewed PM&R articles.
Additional Information
Activity Format:
8 PM&R articles are listed with links accompanied by 4 multiple choice questions corresponding to each article. To complete this activity, the participant must read all 8 articles, and complete the self-assessment examination. To receive ABPMR MOC credit, the exam must be completed. A minimum passing score of 75% is required for this activity. You will have unlimited attempts to achieve a passing score.
Learning Objectives
Article No. 1: Effect of Aerobic Exercise Interventions on Mobility among Stroke Patients. A Systematic Review. Kendall BJ, Gothe NP. Am J Phys Med Rehabil 2016;95:214-224

After completing this MOC Journal CME Article Activity, the participant should be able to:
1. Identify different potential modes and advantages for aerobic exercise interventions for chronic, long-term stroke survivors.
2. Demonstrate awareness of how aerobic endurance exercise can impact various mobility outcome measures during the subacute phase after stroke.

Article No. 2: Peroneal Stimulation for Foot Drop After Stroke: A Systematic Review. Dunning K, O’Dell MW, Kluding P, McBride K. Am J Phys Med Rehabil 2015;94:649-664

After completing this MOC Journal CME Activity, the participant should be able to:
1. Summarize the effect of daily use of single-channel foot drop stimulation among persons with stroke.
2. Identify various outcome measures used in assessing gait, balance, function, and physiologic impact of mobility in stroke survivors.
3. Demonstrate knowledge of various types of ankle foot orthoses and some potential benefits and features of each.

Article No. 3: Needs of Stroke Survivors as Perceived by Their Caregivers. A Scoping Review. Krishnan S, Pappadis MR, Weller SC, Stearnes M, Kumar A, Ottenbacher KJ, Reistetter TA. Am J Phys Med Rehabil 2017;96:487-505

After completing this MOC Journal CME Activity, the participant should be able to:
1. Identify the needs of stroke survivors as perceived by their caregivers.
2. Understand complex factors grouped into themes labeled as “body functional needs”, “activity and participatory needs”, and “environmental needs”.
3. Appreciate how incorporating caregivers in clinical decision making can impact outcomes among stroke survivors.

Article No. 4: Powered Wheelchair Skills Training for Persons with Stroke. A Randomized Controlled Trial. Mountain AD, Kirby RL, Smith C, Eskes G, Thompson K. Am J Phys Med Rehabil 2014;93:1031-1043

After completing this MOC Journal CME Activity, the participant should be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of potential impacts of formal powered wheelchair skills training on persons with stroke.
2. Identify factors that can influence the prescription of powered mobility devices.
3. Describe the effect caused by spatial neglect on the efficacy of wheelchair skills training.

Article No. 5: Combining afferent stimulation and mirror therapy for improving muscular, sensorimotor, and daily functions after chronic stroke: A randomized, placebo-controlled study. Lee et al. Am J Phys Med Rehabil 2015;94:859–868

After completing this MOC Journal CME Activity, the participant should be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of treatment effects of mirror therapy with mesh glove afferent stimulation on muscular properties, sensorimotor functions, and daily function in chronic stroke survivors as compared to mirror therapy alone and mirror therapy with sham stimulation.
2. Understand the proposed physiologic concepts behind the effectiveness of mirror therapy approaches.

Article No. 6: Effects of game-based constraint-induced movement therapy on balance in patients with stroke. A Single-Blind Randomized Controlled Trial. Choi HS, Shin WS, Bang DH, Choi SJ. Am J Phys Med rehabil 2017;96:184-190

After completing this MOC Journal CME Activity, the participant should be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of game-based training that allows application of constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) to the lower extremities.
2. Be familiar with the potential impact of game-based CIMT on balance in patients with stroke.

Article No. 7: Early Inpatient Rehabilitation Admission and Stroke Patient Outcomes. Wang H, Carnicia M, DiVita M, Mix J, Niewczyk P. Am J Phys Med Rehabil 2015;94:85-100

After completing this MOC Journal CME Activity, the participant should be able to:
1. Identify factors associated with admission and discharge outcomes in persons with stroke.
2. Understand how the length of time between stroke onset and inpatient rehabilitation facility admission is associated with patient outcomes such as FIM gains, discharge destinations, and length of stay according to United States data on persons with mild, moderate, and severe stroke impairments.
2. Demonstrate awareness of recommendations for timing of inpatient rehabilitation facility admissions for various stroke impairment levels.

Article No. 8: Effects of Home-based Telesupervising Rehabilitation on Physical Function for Stroke Survivors with Hemiplegia. Chen et al. Am J Phys Med Rehabil 2017;96:152-160

After completing this MOC Journal CME Activity, the participant should be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of the effects of home-based telesupervising rehabilitation on physical function for stroke survivors with hemiplegia.
2. Understand the impacts of rehabilitation therapy and factors that contribute to caregiver burden.
3. Identify potentially valuable physical exercise and neuromuscular stimulation interventions that can be safely and effectively used in the home environment with caregiver assistance and therapist telesupervision.
