Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders: From Science to Policy

Dr. Linda Rosenstock served from 2000 to 2012 as Dean of the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, one of the nation’s top ranked schools. She currently works full-time at UCLA as Professor in the Departments of Health Policy and Management, Medicine, and Environmental Health Sciences. She is a recognized authority in occupational and environmental health as well as global public health and science policy. Prior to UCLA, Dr. Rosenstock served from 1994 to 2000 as the Director of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), where she led a staff of 1,500 at the only federal agency mandated to undertake research and prevention activities in occupational safety and health. During her tenure, Dr. Rosenstock was instrumental in creating the award-winning public-private partnership, NORA (National Occupational Research Agenda), a framework for guiding occupational safety and health research. In recognition of her efforts, in 2000, Dr. Rosenstock received the Presidential Distinguished Executive Rank Award, the highest executive service award in the U.S. government. Internationally, she has been active in teaching and research in many developing countries and has served as an advisor to the World Health Organization. She is also a noted author of several hundred scientific articles and several books. She is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Medicine (IOM). In 2011, she was appointed by President Barack Obama to the Advisory Group on Prevention, Health Promotion and Integrative and Public Health. Dr. Rosenstock received her M.D. and M.P.H. from The Johns Hopkins University, and her advanced training at the University of Washington.
