Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Radiofrequency Ablation for Morton's Neuroma: Outcomes and Predictors of Success
Back to course
Pdf Summary
The systematic review and meta-analysis conducted by Rafael Llombart-Blanco and colleagues focused on evaluating the efficacy and safety of radiofrequency ablation for treating Morton’s neuroma, a painful condition affecting the nerve tissue of the foot. The study adhered to the PRISMA guidelines, incorporating data from eight studies involving a total of 237 patients.

The results indicated that radiofrequency ablation substantially reduces pain in individuals with Morton's neuroma. At the final follow-up, 47.57% of participants achieved complete pain relief, while 83.4% experienced at least partial improvement. Only 16.4% reported no benefit. Various factors, such as the temperature of the radiofrequency application and the number of cycles, influenced the treatment's effectiveness. Higher temperatures of 85°C and fewer radiofrequency cycles were associated with better outcomes in reducing pain levels.

Regarding safety, complications were minimal, with only a 2.1% incidence rate, and most complications resolved without significant interventions.

Despite promising results, limitations exist due to the small number of studies and the lack of randomized controlled trials, which restricts the ability to draw definitive conclusions. Additionally, short follow-up periods limit insights into long-term outcomes. The study suggested further research to explore potential advantages more thoroughly and verify whether the observed improvements translate into meaningful clinical benefits over the long term.

In conclusion, radiofrequency ablation shows promise as an effective and safe nonsurgical treatment option for Morton’s neuroma, offering significant pain relief. Further investigation through high-quality trials is needed to reinforce these findings and refine treatment protocols.
